My boss has a second home in Martha’s Vineyard. They rent out the house during the busy summer months but other than that he goes down to about once per month and sometimes more frequently. Last year he offered that I could use the house free of charge during the off season or any time that it was not rented and he wasn’t using it. Mr. SFF and I finally found a weekend that we were both free and the house was available so we invited my mom and my sister to join us for an extended weekend. Continue reading “Our “Free” Long Weekend at Martha’s Vineyard”
This past weekend was a busy one! I was non-stop for 3 days and was certainly feeling it for a couple of days after. Thankfully my wallet didn’t get all that much exercise as I was able to keep my costs in check. Friday Mr. SFF and I shot a wedding so we were on our feet for 13 hours. It may have been a long day but we got to witness the wedding from start to finish for some good friends so it was worth all of the work!
The weekend itself was all about Spartan. I volunteered at the Spartan Beast race at Continue reading “Weekend in Review – Spartan Sprint at Killington”
Weekday evening are usually pretty chill around the SFF household and most evenings are spent in. But some good friends who spent the summer in town are heading out next week and invited us celebrate their 15th anniversary with them. The plan was to meet up at the local minor league baseball park for some of America’s favorite pastime, baseball.
The baseball field is about 2.5 miles away so Mr. SFF and I rode our bikes. The temps were high but it was a nice ride and was much better than that hassle of trying to find a place to park. Tickets are pretty cheap which makes this particular park great. Last night was particularly wonderful though as it was 25¢ hot dog night (woohoo, thank you McKenzie’s)!
Usually my Spartan blog posts are very upbeat but unfortunately today’s is not. Last weekend we went up to Canada for the Ottawa Spartan Beast race which was held at Mont Ste Marie. My Spartan buddy and I signed up for the race at the beginning of the year and have been training for 7 months for this race. I have done Spartan races before but the Beast is the hardest distance and often includes lots of vertical gain. This race was 14.9 miles, had 33 obstacles, and had a total of 4617 ft of elevation gain.
Although I am currently in the best shape of my life, a combination of the high temp and humidity and not drinking enough water just before and Continue reading “Mont Ste Marie Spartan Race”
Almost every year when we head down to our annual beach vacation in Rhode Island, I will take a little trip over to one of the nearby casinos. Sometimes there is a small group of us (never Mr. SFF) and sometimes it is just two of us. I realize that doing a blog post on a personal finance blog about gambling is a little risky as this is certainly not an activity that I recommend but after briefly mentioning my luck during our vacation, I wanted to summarize my thoughts. Please note that these are only my views and beliefs and what I have found works for me but no way would I ever recommend you go gamble unless this is an entertainment activity you enjoy and are OK paying for it.
Last week while on vacation I was debating if I even wanted to take my annual excursion as every dollar saved helps to get me a little closer to my Continue reading “My Thoughts on Gambling”
Every year Mr. SFF and I spend a week down in Misquamicut RI with Mr. SFF’s very large extended family. There are usually three rented cottages with various family member plus one house that is owned by one aunt and uncle that is right on the beach and is sort of Grand Central Station for all of us.
It can be a crazy at times but is a lot of fun and has always been a fairly reasonably priced vacation. There is usually no real plans for the week and Continue reading “Beach Week! Our Annual Summer Vacation”
Mr. SFF and I just spent a fabulous weekend down in NJ for a family wedding. This was the first black tie wedding I have been to and will probably go in the books as the most beautiful and lavish as well. The bride was stunning and both of them were beaming of love all day. I am so happy for the two of them!
As were are family we were invited to the rehearsal dinner on Friday evening. I left work early for the drive down so that we could attend. We were able to wear clothes we already owned so the only expense we had on Friday was filling up the gas tank.
For Saturday we were on our own for breakfast and lunch. We found an absolutely amazing restaurant that served gluten free food so I was in heaven with Continue reading “Weddings are Expensive, for Everyone”
This past weekend was great! Mr. SFF and I drove down to my dad’s house on Friday after work to stay for the weekend. We stopped for dinner on the way but there is a great restaurant just off the highway where we got dinner for both of us plus two beers for Mr. SFF for only $42 (including tip), all which Mr. SFF paid for. If only we could get that kind of deal in my home town!
The main purpose of this trip was to run Boston Super on Saturday down in Barre, MA. This is the first of my Spartan Races this year and as my dad’s house was only an hour 15 away it was a great place to stay (free lodging!). In case Continue reading “Weekend in Review”
Yup, its not even summer and we have already purchased our seasons passes for next winter. Mr. SFF and I love heading to our favorite local mountain Smuggler’s Notch as often as possible once the snow flies. We have had a seasons pass there for the past 13 years and next year will be no different.
But why am I talking about ski season when summer isn’t even here yet? Well Smuggs has a great deal where if you buy your seasons pass by Memorial Day they will give you the previous year’s pre-Labor Day price. This year it actually made a bigger difference than Continue reading “Memorial Day – A Great Time to Buy a Ski Pass!”
I had a little adventure this weekend at the White Mountains in New Hampshire. As Mr. SFF was on a different trip down in Austin I was travelling solo. Unlike trips in the past, I was very conscious of how much I was spending because every dollar saved was potentially a dollar that could go towards my financial independence. After work on Thursday I drove to NH to spend the first night in a hostel in Conway, NH. I was meeting an old high school friend who had chosen the hostel for us and a couple of her other friends. It has been probably more than a decade since I last stayed in a hostel but I was glad she chose this place as I only paid Continue reading “My White Mountain Adventure”
