Tire Changeover = Free!

I live in a part of the country where I own two sets of tires for my car.  One set of all seasons for spring through fall and then a good set of studded snow tires for the winter.  Last year I replaced both sets within a few months of each other which was painful to the budget but necessary.

Since I end up doing two changeovers per year when I first got my car I bought a second set of steel rims for my winter tires.  They are nothing fancy but it saves a bunch of money come fall and spring.  Instead of spending approx $80 to have the tires mounted and balanced twice a year I can usually get away with a $20 changeover as they are already mounted on the rims.\

This past weekend I decided to go a little out of my comfort zone and do the switch myself to save a little money.  My sister always does her own changeovers so I figured I could do it as well.  She lent me her tools (torque wrench and nicer jack than the one that comes with the car) and I got to work.

I was a little nervous at first but it really wasn’t all that bad.  I didn’t keep track of the time but it probably only took me 30 minutes to get all 4 switched over and it saved me about $20.  Not a huge savings but every little bit helps, especially as we have an investment property under contract and we will need a lot of money for that in January.  So now when I drive around and hear the clicking of the studs on the pavement I smile knowing that I did it myself and saved money at the same time.

  1. Good for you. It is quite easy to do. I would advice going to a tire shop and asking them to re-torque your tires after a couple of days as a precautionary measure. They’d it for free, and you’ll feel better.

    1. Good advice. My sister re-torqued the tires a couple of days later and found one of the lug nuts wasn’t fully tightened so this is certainly a good idea.
